Not Cute Enough

BEIJING, China (CNN) — A little girl and her song captivated millions of viewers during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. But what they saw was not what they heard.

Games organizers confirm that Lin Miaoke, who performed “Ode to the Motherland” as China’s flag was paraded Friday into Beijing’s National Stadium, was not singing at all.

Lin was lip-syncing to the sound of another girl, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, who was heard but not seen, apparently because she was deemed not cute enough.

“The reason was for the national interest,” said Chen Qigang, the ceremony’s musical director, in a state radio interview. “The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feeling and expression. … Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects.”

The decision was made at the highest levels, Chen said.

A grandmother’s garden gnome has been returned to her after seven months – together with a photo album showing he has been on a world-wide tour

In an episode that re-creates a scene from the French film Amelie, Murphy was returned to Eve Stuart-Kelso with a letter saying he had taken off because he had “itchy feet”.

In the 2001 film, starring Audrey Tautou, Amelie steals her father’s gnome and gives it to a friend who takes it around the world and posts back pictures of it in famous places to show him what he is missing in life.

Besides Murphy was a Tesco carrier bag containing the album of 48 photos and stamped immigration permits to South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong and Laos.

The album showed Murphy – who weighs a hefty 8lb (3.6kg) – abseiling down a mountain, standing in a shark’s mouth, swimming in the sea, and riding a motorbike.

Murphy took to his travels with a companion only referred to as “The Bear” – although some of the photos picture a group of young men who might have been responsible.

The accompanying letter explained his disappearance: “There’s more to life than watching daily commuter traffic and allowing passing cats to urinate on you.”

The Mario Scarf Blog – An Extreme-Geek Knitting Project

Welcome to my blog about my quest- my quest to knit the entire first level map of Super Mario Brothers. This first post will outline the reasons for investing so much time, energy, and money into quite possibly one of the nerdiest endeavors undertaken.

The Super Mario Brother scarf was sadly not my own idea. I give all credit to my sweet, super nerdy boyfriend Jason. Jason is a big time video gamer and has an affinity for old school Nintendo games.

CNN Headline T-Shirts

I think CNN’s idea of being able to buy a headline t-shirt is a clever little idea.  Not only can someone buy a shirt with something quirky, but CNN is able to get a little extra revenue and some advertising.

I wasn’t aware until recently that you can buy past headline t-shirts.  Link

If you happen to have a t-shirt, they are also having a little challenge you can enter.

Ohio church: No kissing, tickling allowed

CINCINNATI – The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has issued a detailed list of inappropriate behaviors for priests, saying they should not kiss, tickle or wrestle children.

The newest version of the archdiocese’s Decree on Child Protection also prohibits bear hugs, lap-sitting and piggyback rides.

But it says priests may still shake children’s hands, pat them on the back and give high-fives.

Bag of Randomness

  • I’m still in awe of how the U.S. men finished the 400 freestyle relay.  There’s a lot of things that helped make that the greatest swim race in history, but the one fact that still amazes me was that the team that came in 5th place still beat the previous world record of 3:12.23, and here are the results of the record breakers of that race:
    1.  U.S. – 3:08.24
    2.  France – 3:08.32
    3.  Australia – 3:09.91
    4.  Italy – 3:11.48
    5.  Sweden – 3:11.92

  • I really didn’t care much for Michael Phelps until this race when I saw his raw emotion come out.
  • I really like the green world record line NBC has been using for the swimming events.  Overall, their coverage has been fantastic.
  • Is it me, or is there a certain buzz about this Olympics?  And we still have track and field to go.
  • One example of what I meant when I stated that the Asian culture is often made fun of.
  • I find the Where is Bob?  Tales of an absentee manager blog highly entertaining.
  • I’m surprised Madden is no longer an announcer on his own game.
  • Over the weekend, a college friend of mine celebrated her one year anniversary of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  You can read about her journey here.  I’m sure women of faith would greatly benefit from it.  Being an early 30’s mom with three young kiddos and cancer would rock anyone’s world, but not surprisingly, she handled the whole thing gracefully.  I’m sure she would recall that I was the very first person to buy her alcohol on her 21st birthday shortly after midnight I think, on a Baptist campus.  Egad!
  • I saw that Kerri Walsh lost her wedding ring during sand volleyball play.  Lucky for her slow-mo instant replay and metal detectors were there to help her out.
  • I finally found the answer to what that check box does in iTunes.  Check out #7.
  • The majority of the light bulbs in GeedingManor are energy efficient.  Those bulbs have come a long way.  They aren’t as big and you can choose from a florescent or natural shine.
