New Addition to the Half-Asian Hall of Fame

Betty Nguyen
bettyng.jpg

She is currently a CNN anchor, but she use to be an anchor in Dallas-Fort Worth.  I always thought she was half-Asian, but wasn’t for sure until I checked out this section of CNN.com about The Asian American Journey.  It’s a great place to check out if you my kind of roots.

In this interview she mentions she’s a ‘hapa‘ – which is a slang term for half-Asian, something I was not aware of.  She goes on to tell how for the longest time half-Asians felt frustration filling out a form that asked for your race, since we kinda felt we are force to pick one parent over the other regarding this.  Finally the Census Bureau got things straight and we now have a check mark box on those forms – we finally count!

The one thing that did upset me was that she showcases a book that has nothing but pictures of half-Asians.  I wonder why a picture of the world’s best half-Asian blogger isn’t included?!?!

Christian Leaders, CNN to Question Clinton, Obama and Edwards

WASHINGTON – Top democratic presidential candidates will take the stage to discuss the issues of faith, morals and poverty starting this coming weekend.

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), and former Sen. John Edwards will participate in the nationally televised “Pentecost 2007: Taking the Vision to the Streets” forum that will be held June 3-6.

The forum, sponsored by Sojourners/Call to Renewal, will take place on the campus of The George Washington University with parts of the event hosted at National City Christian Church in Washington. Sojourners founder Jim Wallis, CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien, and nationally prominent religious leaders will ask questions of the candidates.

“The goal of ‘Pentecost 2007: Taking Vision to the Streets’ is to call individuals, churches, and most importantly, our political leaders to commit to putting poverty at the top of our national agenda,” organizers state in the event website. “We believe that the conversation about moral values in America has been widening and deepening, building into a movement for real change.”

Religious Books Had a ‘Difficult Year’

The Association of American Publishers (AAP), the national trade association of the U.S. book publishing industry, recently released its annual estimate of total book sales in the United States, and according to its findings, religious books had a “difficult year.”

The report, which reveals sales from 2006, marked a sharp 10.2 percent drop in religious books sales compared to the previous twelve months. The trend was one of the biggest decreases among all the book categories reported on by AAP.

According to AAP, the drop is not critical, however, since “compound growth is still strong at 7.5 percent per year.”

Weird Dream

haroldtaftkxas.jpgThe other night I had a dream that our local NBC news affiliate was doing so bad in the ratings that they created a computerized version of Harold Taft to do the weather.  Since this dream has stuck in my head, I did a little research and found out that his last weather forecast was on my 16th birthday.  I also found out that Ch 5’s website no longer has a webpage dedicated to Harold Taft.  I blame Frinfrock.  He always seemed a little too eager for Harold Taft to move on so he could take on the Cheif Meteorologist role.  I bet he’s a good guy, but as a young teen that was my impression of him.

The funny part is, and I have to be careful saying this around these parts, I really never cared for Harold Taft, but I do have a lot of respect for the guy.   However, I will say I do think NBC 5 does have the worst news broadcast in the area, and that’s even behind the CW.

Speaking of dreams, my friend Jimi told me about the dream he had last night.  He was eating at IHOP with John Madden.  Jimi and Madden got into a verbal debate, and the pancakes started to talk to Madden in a feminine voice.  Madden got upset, stood up, stabbed the pancakes with a fork and yelled “effing lesbian pancakes!”

True story of smear tactic?

Edwards had told Kerry he was going to share a story with him that he’d never told anyone else—that after his son Wade had been killed, he climbed onto the slab at the funeral home, laid there and hugged his body, and promised that he’d do all he could to make life better for people, to live up to Wade’s ideals of service. Kerry was stunned, not moved, because, as he told me later, Edwards had recounted the same exact story to him, almost in the exact same words, a year or two before—and with the same preface, that he’d never shared the memory with anyone else.

My Hotmail Account Rejoices

SEATTLE – A 27-year-old man described as one of the world’s most prolific spammers was arrested Wednesday, and federal authorities said computer users across the Web could notice a decrease in the amount of junk e-mail.

Robert Alan Soloway is accused of using networks of compromised “zombie” computers to send out millions upon millions of spam e-mails.

“He’s one of the top 10 spammers in the world,” said Tim Cranton, a Microsoft Corp. lawyer who is senior director of the company’s Worldwide Internet Safety Programs. “He’s a huge problem for our customers. This is a very good day.”

A federal grand jury last week returned a 35-count indictment against Soloway charging him with mail fraud, wire fraud, e-mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering.
